The village Khatyn is a symbol of the tragedy of the
Belarusian people, its mournful page in the history of the Great Patriotic War.
On March 22, 1943 were killed or burned by retaliatory division of security
police from structure of the Ukrainian collaborationist formation of 149
civilians of Khatyn. The 118th retaliatory battalion was created from
inhabitants of the western areas of Ukraine and prisoners of war of Red Army.
The former Polish major Smovsky was ordered a battalion. German "chief"
of a retaliatory battalion was the major SS Erich Kerner.
