The operating monastery of the Armenian Apostolic Church
Gandzasar is mentioned for the first time in the middle of the X-th century.
According to the national legend, a monastery Gandzasar because of silver mines
(in Armenian "gandz" - treasure, "sar" - the mountain)
received the name by the name of mountains. According to a legend, in a tomb of
the temple the head of John the Baptist brought here from Kilikiysky Armenia
during one of crusades chopped off by the Tyrant is buried. In 1701 from
Gandzasar the well-known addresses of east Armenians with a request for
acceptance of the Russian citizenship and the military help in release from the
Persian-Turkish yoke were sent to the Emperor of Russia Peter I. The monastery strongly suffered in the period of the
military conflict of 1991-1994 as a result of actions of the Azerbaijani
long-range artillery and military aircraft.
