On January 21, 2013 the Russian Federation post issues a postage
stamp devoted to the 100 anniversary of the outstanding nuclear physicist, founder
of institute of nuclear researches in Dubna, academician of the USSR Academy of
Sciences, the Socialist Labor Hero George Flyorov (1913-1990). On stamp is
presented G. Flyorov's portrait and the 114th element of periodic system of
chemical elements (Mendeleyev's table) called Flyoroviy in honor of the
scientist.
The issue is printed in mini
sheet of 15 values with decorating margins. Design: А. Povarikhin. Size of stamp: 42 х 30 mm. Edition: 450 000 copies (30 000 sheetlets).
George Flyorov participated in creation of the first Soviet
nuclear (plutonium) bomb of RDS-1 and in 1949 personally made risky experiment
by determination of critical weight of plutonium. George Flyorov was
responsible for the main (physical) part of explosion, having constructed the
special remote sensor of a neutron background installed near a charge, to
quickly receiving information directly on command point.
